Everybody loves the era of early 1990s Japanese sports cars. If you’re like me you sit around waiting for the second coming of said cars. We’ve got the GTR, we (maybe will) have the NSX, and now we’ve got the LC500, which looks suspiciously like a Supra. Now I know there’s supposed to be some sort of BMW/Supra bla bla, but that rumor has gone cold, the LC500 is hot hot hot. Lets see where it fits in the world of $100k sports cars and grand tourers.

Porsche 911 - $84,000 350hp 3042lb
Mercedes SL400 - $85,050 329hp 3836lb
BMW 650i - $88,700 445hp 4275lb
Porsche 911 S - $98,900 400hp 3075lb
Lexus LC500 - $99,000? 467hp ????lb
Nissan GTR - $101,770 545hp 3851lb
Jaguar F Type R - $103,600 550hp 3815lb
Mercedes SL500 - $108,050 449hp 4001lb
BMW M6 - $113,400 560hp 4250lb

Price-wise the LC make a compelling alternative to boring 911s, SL, and 6 Series. Performance-wise the F Type and GTR (which is nearly 10 years old now!) will probably crush it.

The base version of the AMG GT would line up nicely with the LC500, it makes roughly the same amount of power (470hp). For whatever reason Mercedes hasn’t gotten around to selling a “non-S” version of the AMG GT in the US. Judging by the UK pricing, the base version of AMG GT is about 88% of the S version putting it at roughly $113,000.

The Aston Martin Vantage and Maserati Gran Turismo could both be considered competitors, but they both cost quite a bit more - $121k for the Aston and $130 for the Maserati.

The Viper and the Z06 are also sporty cars for under $100k, but cost way less and both have a way better power/weight ratio.

If I remember correctly there’s supposed to be a 600hp version of the LC500, probably with the use of hybrid assistance. This car would probably stack up performance-wise with the GTR, NSX, 911 Turbo, and R8.

Finally if a new Supra does show up, I have a hard time believing it would out perform this Lexus. Leading me to think a new Supra would align more with the Nissan Z/pony car bracket.

Yep, for that money I’d take a GTR.

$20 that Lexus weighs as much if not more than the GTR too

Word on the street is that lightness was a major driver for the project, I’m guessing low to mid 3000

Anyone know what the focus of this car is? If it a track weapon like the gt-r, or a autobahn cruise missile like the Mercedes? Trying to do both like the 911?

I’m guessing something in the middle, 911/Vantage on the spectrum of sports and luxury.

Is that Lexus’ photo up top? If so, they are presenting it on a track, not cruising the highway.

I think that’s really ambitious.

Is this a unique platform or does it share a platform with the RC?

Even if it doesn’t, this is a fairly heavy v8; it’s RWD, I assume a fairly heavy transmission; lots of luxury bits inside, and I assume no heavy use of carbon fiber (or even aluminum?) outside. If I were to place a bet, I’d bet it will be closer to (but below) 4000 lbs than it is to 3000 lbs.

Compare it to a new Camaro. This car’s chassis, interior, engine, and transmission will likely weigh more than the new Camaro’s. In SS trim the new camaro weighs 3,600+ lbs. I’d be pleasantly surprised if this Lexus was able to beat that.

Very intensive use of lightweight materials.

Impressive but I still doubt it will get the car below $3,600lbs. I mean, an LFA weighed 3,200 lbs and that used much more light weight materials (i believe a CF tub as well) and was dimensionally smaller.

It’s just really tough to get a 4 seat car in the lower 3,000's these days, much less one with a v8, a 10 speed tranny, and miles of leather and touch screens in the interior. Think about it, an RX-8 weighs right around 3000lbs and that had a rotary and far fewer luxury bits than the LC.

Confirmed from a Lexus representative at NAIAS its 4100 to 4200 lbs.

I strongly suspect they are targeting the middle aged guy that _thinks_ he wants an M4 but finds it way too uncomfortable once he actually has it. This will likely perform very well, but be a more forgiving day-to-day machine.

It’s a 500hp car, who cares if it weighs more than 3000lbs?

If that’s not enough for you then go LS swap a Miata.

First of all, I wasn’t complaining about how much I thought it was going to weigh. If you review the thread, the post I was responding to said he was guessing the car would weight in the low to mid 3,000's. My response was that I thought it would weigh more like the mid to high 3,000's and most likely more towards the high than the mid. I did not, at any time, comment on whether I thought the car would be good or bad because of it.

The LC500 is not based on the Supra, rather the SC line. (Toyota Soarer) It’s a Grand Tourer and Lexus is the Luxury marque of Toyota (just how Infiniti is the luxury marque of Nissan). The car is supposed to focus on being a luxury sports car. The new Supra (FT-1) however, will be way cheaper and will focus on smaller competitors such like the new BMW Z5.
